the last verse joel2
"Whosoever CALLS upon the NAME of the LORD
will be SAVED." (capitals mine) First of all, I believe that one must know what it means to CALL, in this verse. It is grace that a person even will think about calling on the name of the Lord in the intense, wicked last days. The original Hebrew word implies an ardent, powerful, passionate movement of the soul toward G-d. So, in a sense, this may include repentance as a prerequisite to the effectual crying out to G-d, as faith is required. ("When the son of Man returns will He find faith on the earth?"} Secondly. to call on the NAME of the Lord, one must know what the name of the Lord is! There are many idols, false religions, etc. Even modern Christianity falls short. Most do not even know the Hebrew name for Jesus is Y'shua. And the Old Testament holds many "names" for the one true Creator, yet none of them include the letter "J", as this does not exist in the Hebrew. Therefore J-hovah should actually be read as Y-hovah. The name choice for the Lord that one makes would vary according to the faith and knowledge that the individual possesses. Of course, since the name Jesus Christ (Yeshua Maschiakh) is the name by which men are to be saved, as He is the Sacrifice Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, and whose very name means SALVATION (and ANOINTED ONE), it makes sense that this is the name to call upon. Thirdly, the LORD is He whose name we are calling upon, and I believe that because He should be the Lord of every aspect of our lives, as He is the Author and Finisher of our faith, our entire lives should reflect that He is truly reigning in our hearts. The "calling on the name of the Lord" is therefore not only a one time act, but a way of life, an ongoing process of clinging to G-d, of relying on Him. Finally, "will be saved" is the equivalent of "will be delivered". I believe that this in effect means that He will deliver us not only from the evil adversary, but also from our sin nature, from disease, from poverty, and from delusion. Because of the phrases that follow, and because of the way the verse begins, I also believe that this is a prophetic verse. This verse is talking about those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ (and those who are yet to accept Him) Isn't this a powerful verse? As we look toward the fulfilment of it in the Holy Land, we should rest in the assurance that we are His people, and His holy city! ("The kingdom of heaven is within you.") |
