Liberty galatians5
The first two words of Galatians chapter 5 are "Stand fast". We should know right off the bat that this is not passive instruction. However, the command goes on to say "Stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ hath (past tense) made us free...".
First of all, I believe most of us would prefer that liberty would simply come upon us by default. That if we could simply rid ourselves of the bondage of the flesh and the world, we could peacefully rest in liberty. No further effort required. Nothing could be further from the truth. To abide in liberty requires an act of standing fast, or firm; unmovable. The truth is, Christ is not going to make us free... he already has. It is our job to firmly stand in that liberty. Our duty is found in John chapter 8, verse 31 & 32: "If you continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." We must actively continue in the Lord's Word. Feed upon it, meditate upon, become a doer of it. This is what the apostle James refers to as "looking into the perfect law of liberty, and continuing therein..." James 1:25. The word becomes the "perfect law of liberty" as we continue in it and absorb it into our spirits. |
