Context and preaching of Mark 9:43-48 mark9
It seems as though the most scriptural application of this passage has to do with Jesus warning disciples concerning the seriousness of offenses. John had just rebuked one for casting out devils in jesus name though he was not one of the 12. Then in verse 50, He makes a statement concerning Christian duty to be salt. It seems here, again, that Jesus is warning about offending others. The verses from 43-48 are certainly not a threat to Believers that if they offend someone they are doomed to hell. They certainly are not a threat to the lost, that hell is conditional upon your guilt in offending people (offending people is not what causes one to be hell-bound). These verses then must be an example as to the seriousness of the crime of being an offense. Better it is that we loose hand, foot, or eye than that they cause us to be an offense to ourselves or to others.
