Proverbs 24:30-32 Proverbs24
In this passage of scripture, the writer (presumably Solomon) tells of walking by the "field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding...". He then notices the condition of it.
Many of us stop there. We notice the condition of the life of others. We notice the trouble that perhaps they have gotten themselves into. We notice what have been the negative consequences of their choices. However, the writer went further than that. He states that he "looked upon it, and received instruction." Let's consider this... how did he receive instruction? Did someone pop out of the vineyard he was looking at and proceed to teach a lesson? I don't think that was the case. The writer simply received instruction by observing. This brings me to my point. If we only notice the choices others have made and what the result was, we will learn nothing and, at worst, will stumble along to make the same mistake. However, if we will see the mistakes others have made and then go on to "receive instruction" from those mistakes, we will gain the wisdom of the experience without the pain of the consequences. |
